Denise L. Majette was born in Brooklyn, New York and was educated in New York City public schools. She was among the first classes of women at Yale College, earning her undergraduate degree 1976. In 1979 she was one of four African-American women to earn a Juris Doctor degree from Duke University School of Law. Blessed with a strong foundation created by her parents, her church and community, she has a strong Christian faith and believes that, “to whom much is given, of whom much is required.” After law school, Majette became a staff attorney at the Legal Aid Society of Northwest North Carolina in Winston-Salem. She represented low-income individuals in landlord-tenant, consumer, disability, and family law cases. She also served as a Clinical Adjunct Professor at Wake Forest University School of Law before moving to Georgia in 1983. Denise has worked in both the public and private sector for over 25 years. In Georgia, she served as a law clerk for Judge R. Keegan Federal, Superior Court of DeKalb County; staff attorney for Judge Robert Benham on the Court of Appeals of Georgia and a Special Assistant Attorney General for the State of Georgia. On July 1, 1992, Ms. Majette took office as an Administrative Law Judge for the State Board of Workers’ Compensation. In 1993,Governor Zell Miller appointed her to the State Court of DeKalb County. She won election twice after her appointment with overwhelming majorities. On February 1, 2002, Judge Majette resigned her judgeship to run for Congress. Majette shocked the nation by defeating the 10-year incumbent in the Democratic primary six months later. Majette won 77 percent of the vote in the general election. In March 2004, Denise chose to run for the open U. S. Senate seat vacated by Senator Zell Miller. Majette made history when she defeated seven other Democratic candidates to become the first woman and first African-American from Georgia to be Democratic Party nominee for the United States Senate. She received an historic 1.3 million votes in the general election. No other woman or African-American had ever received more votes in a Georgia statewide election. Congresswoman Majette’s professional and community activities have included Miller Grove PTA, Leadership DeKalb, the Junior League, the DeKalb Bar Association, DeKalb Lawyers Association, the National Coalition of 100 Black Women, the American Bar Association Litigation Section Task Force on the Judiciary, the Decatur DeKalb YMCA Child Care Committee and the National Center for Grandparents Raising Grandchildren. Denise is married to Rogers J. Mitchell, Jr., and they have three children and two grandchildren. Denise and her husband are active members of Antioch A.M.E. Church in Stone Mountain, near their home. |
