For Sherry Jackson, working to promote the common good and give back to a community that has blessed her with so much is her life’s work. A lawyer for the Elderly Legal Assistance Program and the executive director for the Community Care Services Program, Sherry has dedicated her life to helping make the lives of others better. And it’s with that charitable spirit in mind that she decided to enter politics, announcing her candidacy for Georgia’s 46th District’s State Senate seat. A lifelong Democrat, Sherry is committed to providing the necessary support and resources that will enable our local communities to meet the challenges we face with regard to education, economic growth and opportunity, health care, transportation, water management and a whole host of other issues that are pressing on everyday working families. A native of Walton County, Sherry always has considered Northeast Georgia her home. Her father, the late Willie C. Jackson, was a native of Loganville and worked as a painter for Ford Motor Company. Her mother, the late Bessie Jackson Garrett, worked for the Walton County Hospital for several years before serving as a human resources director for an international loss control company. Her mother also served on the board of the Monroe Housing Authority, working to help low-income citizens in her community find affordable housing. Sherry's parents taught her the value of hard work, the promise of an education and the call of public service. Because of the example set by her family, Sherry understands that small town values can help you obtain big time results. Today, Sherry is married to the Rev. Isaiah Ellison, who serves as an associate minister at Ebenezer Baptist Church-West, where they both serve on the church’s Capital Stewardship Campaign Committee. Together, they have raised a daughter, who is enrolled at the University of Georgia, and a son, who is at Western Carolina University, and two other adult children. And she is actively involved in her community, having served with a variety of organizations, including the University of Georgia’s School of Law Association Council, the Athens Technical College Secretarial Advisory Board, the Athens Neighborhood Health Center Board, the Board of Directors of the American Red Cross in Northeast Georgia, the Athens Area Attention Home Board, the Athens-Clarke County Revolving Loan Committee, the Board of Directors of the Athens Justice Project and as a coach for the Oconee County Mock Trial Team. She completed the Leadership Athens program and Leadership Georgia program. Sherry is a graduate the University of Georgia. _________________________________________________________________ |
