A lifelong resident of Northeast Georgia, Jane Kidd has served the past two years as state representative from House District 115. The daughter of former Georgia Gov. Ernest Vandiver, she previously served on the Lavonia City Council for six years. She has been active in numerous areas of community service since moving to Athens and won her first election to the state legislature by a convincing margin in 2004. She announced last summer she would seek the Senate seat being vacated by Sen. Brian Kemp (R- Athens).

“I look forward to meeting with and talking with the voters of the 46th District during the course of this campaign,” Jane said. “This is a very important election year in Georgia, and I pledge to listen to the views of the people on the issues and respond accordingly. I will continue to support legislation that benefits our district, rather than be a rubber stamp for the partisan political powers in Atlanta.”

During her first two years in the General Assembly, Jane was one of only 25 lawmakers selected to participate in the inaugural class of the bipartisan Georgia Legislative Leadership Institute and she has twice earned the Environmental Leadership Award, presented by Georgia Conservation Voters.

Jane is the only Athens-area legislator who serves on both the Education Committee and the Health & Human Services Committee. As a member of the Higher Education Committee, she is able to influence legislation important to the University of Georgia. During the recently completed 2006 session, the legislature approved Jane’s proposal to give tax relief to charitable organizations, including the Salvation Army, Habitat for Humanity and many churches. She also co-sponsored legislation that resulted in a new law allowing advance practice registered nurses to prescribe medication to their patients, which will expand access to health care in areas of Georgia underserved by physicians.

Jane and her husband, David, have two children. Her community involvement is extensive. She chaired the successful SPLOST 2000 campaign. She was former chair of the Clarke County Mentor Program and has held leadership positions in the Junior League, Girl Scouts of Northeast Georgia, Athens-Clarke Heritage Foundation, and UGA National Alumni Association. She has also been active in EarthShare of Georgia, Clarke County Clean and Beautiful Commission, and the Clute Barrow Nelson Life Foundation.
