Georgia's WIN List Contingent Marched for Women's Lives!
Have you heard the sound of a million pairs of feet marching? Many of Georgia’s WIN List supporters and board members did when they joined the March for Women’s Lives in Washington, DC on April 25th. The March, in which more than a million women, men, and children joined together to march for our reproductive rights and safety was historic on many levels. It was the first time the civil rights community joined the Women’s Movement to march for all our rights. Over 1000 organizations including some of the nation’s leading women’s, health, civil rights, and faith organizations were co-sponsors. WIN List members joined with other groups from Georgia, such as Georgians for Choice, Planned Parenthood of Georgia, NARAL Pro-Choice Georgia, and the Feminist Women’s Health Center to march as the Georgia Coalition. Speakers included Hillary Clinton, Gloria Feldt, Julianne Moore, Madeline Albright, and many more. Among the celebrities who spoke were Kathleen Turner, Whoopi Goldberg, Susan Sarandon, LisaGay Hamilton, and Georgia’s own Ted Turner.
The March was the largest in history and the last time the Mall was the site of an abortion rights rally was 7 months before President Clinton was elected. However, as the million plus marchers knew all too well, the current administration's approach to reproductive rights is clear. The weekend of the March Presidential adviser Karen Hughes likened supporting abortion rights to terrorism. Hughes said, "I think that after September 11, the American people are valuing life more and we need policies to value the dignity and worth of every life. President Bush has worked to say, let's be reasonable, let's work to value life, let's reduce the number of abortions, let's increase adoptions. And I think those are the kind of policies the American people can support, particularly at a time when we are facing an enemy and, really, the fundamental issue between us and the terror network we fight is we value every life."
