Sheila Jones has been an active community and union leader for many years, working with the Fulton County and State Democratic Party, the National Council of Negro Women, Inc., the National Women’s Political Caucus, and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. During her 24 years as a member of Local Lodge 709 – International Association of Machinists & Aerospace Workers, AFL-CIO, Jones has served as Shop Steward, Trustee, Bylaws Committee Chairperson and Executive Board member.

As a legislative representative for the Machinists Union, Jones was instrumental in lobbying for passage of legislation that raised the minimum wage, unemployment benefits and workers compensation benefits for workers in Georgia. Her lobbying activities on behalf of the union took her to Washington, DC where she was the voice on Capitol Hill representing more than 9,000 Machinists workers.

As a longtime resident of northwest Atlanta and past President of Harwell Heights Community Club (in Collier Heights), Jones sponsored a legislative luncheon at the Capitol for senior citizens where they were educated on predatory mortgage lenders. Harwell Road became a safer street when she led efforts to have speed breakers placed on the road. She has organized a community clean up drive, distributed food baskets to the senior citizens during the holiday season, and coordinated a joint voter registration drive for the Atlanta Chapter of National Women Political Caucus and the Atlanta Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.

Jones has volunteered at the Carrie Steele-Pitts Home, the 2003 Hightower Manor Christmas Event, with the Disabled American Veterans Commanders Club and the Girls Basketball and Track Team of Frederick Douglass High School.

She is the youngest of seven children born to the late Reverend Joseph Jones, Sr. and Mrs. Darnella Jones.
