Stephanie Stuckey Benfield, a native Georgian, was first elected to the Georgia General Assembly in 1998. As a member of the House of Representatives, she has authored legislation to lower property taxes for DeKalb seniors, mandate equal treatment for girls’ public school athletic programs, increase patients’ access to medical records, crack down on domestic violence, and reform child custody laws. She was also instrumental in funding full-time juvenile judges for every judicial circuit, increasing the cases tried in juvenile court and access to rehabilitation programs, and passage of child endangerment legislation. Presently, Benfield is vice-chair of the House Judiciary Committee, chair of the Juvenile Law Subcommittee, and a member of the Banks and Banking and Natural Resources committees. Benfield practices family law as a partner with Stuckey and Manheimer, LLC, and she previously worked as a public defender. She earned her BA from the University of Georgia and graduated cum laude from the University of Georgia School of Law. Benfield’s community service includes membership on the board of the DeKalb Council for the Arts, and the Georgia Network to End Sexual Assault, and membership in the Georgia Commission on Women; and the Georgia Child Support Commission. She was named one of “40 under 40" promising Georgians by Georgia Trend magazine in 2002, recognized as one of “16 Attorneys to Watch” by the Fulton County Daily Report in 2003, and honored with the Outstanding Public Service in Child Advocacy Award in 2001 by the Georgia Younger Lawyers Association. Benfield and her husband Robert H. Benfield Jr., an attorney, are the proud parents of a two-year-old son. They are active members of Glenn Memorial United Methodist church. |
